"Could Not Complete Payment" message on refunds using Apple Pay with AMEX cards

We have noticed an inconsistency while running refund transactions with AMEX cards on Apple Pay (card present).

Although these refunds are approved and also appear on IQ, the following error message appears on the customer's device: "Could Not Complete Payment" (screenshot attached). 


This screen only appears for this particular scenario. It is neither observed for authorization transactions (DE 3.1 = '00') with AMEX cards on Apple Pay nor refunds with other card brands.


Has anyone come across this discrepancy? Any suggestions and feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
