The IQ Reporting and Analytics portal has the ability to lookup a BIN to determine if it is credit or debit. Does this functionality exist in an API?
I'm not positive what you are asking. The BIN is the Bank Identification Number, identifying the bank that issued the card. You can use the BIN Lookup interface in iQ to determine the issuing bank for a particular card associated with a transaction or chargeback, but it won't tell you anything about a particular transaction.
If you are looking for information about a particular transaction, you can use the Transaction Search functionality in iQ. There are a number of different parameters you can use in the search, including Merchant Transaction ID, Account #/Token #, Merchant Order Number, etc., but you cannot search just by the BIN. A search by BIN, if it were allowed, would result in a list of all transactions associated with cards issued by a particular bank and likely not assist in retrieving the information you want.
We are looking for a way to determine programmatically whether a card is credit or debit.
I'm sorry. I misunderstood what you were asking. Let me give it another try, with what I hope is the correct info this time.
The Customer Insights feature includes a number of data points, including whether the card is Credit, Debit, Prepaid, etc. If you sign-up for this feature, we return this information in the XML response message under the <enhancedAuthResponse> element. This information is also available in the Customer Insights (SSR) report, which is a csv file generated daily, that you can either download from iQ or pick-up from an FTP location.
So, there's a couple of methods to get the info and digest it programmatically. Personally, I would lean to simply grabbing it from the response messages.
Thanks for that info. I saw a reference for a Master Merchant BIN File. How would that be obtained?
There is a report called the Master Merchant BIN file, but it is not generated off the eComm platform, so I don't have much information on it. I'll locate someone with the answers and have them pick-up this thread.
I did find this document:
Master Merchant BIN File Specification Version 4
I saw that, which is why I asked about it. That would be a solution if we knew how to access it.
Hi, anything new on this?
I would be interested in this as well. Currently, we use BinDB, but with varied success.
Sorry, I thought someone else had picked-up on this thread. As I said, I work on the eComm side of the business and that Master BIN file is generated from a different division, but this is what I have found out.
If you have a Vantiv Relationship Manager assigned to you, then you should request it through them. They will open an internal ticket with our Implementation Group to get you set-up. If you do not yet have an assigned RM, but are working with an Implementation Consultant, then you should talk to them about it, and they should be able to get you set-up to receive the file.
If you are not that far along, then you should talk to your Vantiv Sales Rep and they should include the information when getting you set-up for implementation/on-boarding.
I hope that helps. I'll try to keep a closer eye on this thread to see if I can be of any further help.
